Summary: From AMC Lakes of the Clouds Hut to Joe Dodge Lodge through Tuckerman Ravine.
Day 3:
- 6:30 AM: Another Beautiful morning. Started the day with family style breakfast -oatmeal with raisins and apricots, eggs, pancakes, tea. Looked outside the hut to realize why this hut is called Lakes of the clouds.
- 8:00 AM: Met together to start the day. This was going to be a long hike down today.
Segment: From: AMC Lakes of the Clouds Hut to AMC Joe Dodge Lodge.
- Length: 4.75 Mi; Descent: 3.2K ft; Duration: 6:55 hr
- Ready to go back.
- Started up the “Crawford Trail”, shifted to “Crossover Trail”. this is mostly climb of around 500′.
- Next up was Head-wall.
- Tuckerman Ravine Descent. Will say two main stretches.
- Top Portion: from Head-wall to Hermit Lake Shelter. This is Class 2 slope. Really tricky. (Someone mentioned that in all white mountains this stretch is where the most accidents happen. This made is more thrilling).
- Water flowing down the ravine all around as climbing down.
- Bottom Portion: From Hermit Lake Shelter down to Lodge. Still rocky and tiresome but not so steep as above portion.
- Crossed Crystal Cascades Waterfall here.
- Top Portion: from Head-wall to Hermit Lake Shelter. This is Class 2 slope. Really tricky. (Someone mentioned that in all white mountains this stretch is where the most accidents happen. This made is more thrilling).
- 3:00 PM: Reached back to the lodge. Time to take shoes off (and order new knees and hiking shoes).
